THe process
Catherine and BAZ Productions (the theatre company she co-founded), are beyond proud to have brought The Process, our 4th and final full-scale production, to The Bunker Theatre from January 11th - February 1st 2020.
The story was as accessible as possible, with every show performed in a relaxed environment, every show captioned thanks to The Difference Engine, an audio described performance thanks to Vocaleyes, 3 relaxed performances and 3 post-show panel discussions.
One of the post-show discussions, featuring our Story Consultant Sophie Woolley, Freelance Director Rachel Bagshaw,
Globe Access Manager David Bellwood & our Assistant Director Brian Duffy, chaired by our producer Matt Maltby
The Stage gave The Process 4 stars, say it is a ‘cleverly constructed dystopian thriller… full of empathy, anger, and pleasingly dark humour. Focusing largely on the experiences of D/deaf characters, the text compellingly blends spoken dialogue with British Sign Language, interrogating the often-arbitrary definitions of normalcy that can mean the difference between privilege and discrimination. Heading the cast, Deaf actor Jean St Clair movingly conveys the downward spiral of tech millionaire Jo, betrayed and brutalised by the insidious system she helped to create. Beside her, George Eggay provides some levity as a larger-than-life lawyer, while Catherine Bailey channels frosty, false civility as his status-obsessed wife.”
The Times observed that "Catherine Bailey impresses as a cheerfully brain-dead TV host and a dyspeptic judge" and What's On Stage felt that "Those of us traditionally able to comfortably communicate with our peers suddenly appreciate the struggle that the D/deaf community faces daily. Flipping the tables and demanding that such interpretation now flows two ways instantly intensifies the narrative of The Process.”
